Microscopic Observation Flashcards
1
Q
Resolution
A
The ability to distinguish small objects close together
2
Q
Magnification
A
An enlarged image of an object
3
Q
Contrast
A
The difference in color intensity between an object and its background
4
Q
Compound Microscope
A
A microscope that forms an image using two or more lenses
5
Q
Ocular lens
A
A lens on a bright-field microscope that’s near where you put your eyes
6
Q
Objective Lens
A
The lenses on a bright-field microscope that are near where the same is
7
Q
Condenser
A
A part of a bright-field microscope that collects and directs light and is under the sample
8
Q
Total magnification
A
The product of the magnification of the ocular lens and the objective lens
9
Q
Limitations of bright-field microscopy
A
- Can only resolve a 0.2 um distance between objects, so viruses can’t be seen
- Most cells appear colorless, and staining kills cells
- Runs into issues with refraction of light, so you need immersion oil
