Microscopes/Magnification Flashcards
Light microscopes resolving power?
It can only distinguish between more than 0.2 micrometers
Why can a light microscope only resolve to what it can resolve to?
Wavelength
What type of lens is a light microscope
A convex lems
What is the resolving power of an electron microscope and why?
Can distinguish between 0.1 nano meters because it had a shorter wavelength than a light microscope
What is the equation linking image size, actual size and magnification?
Image size= actual size*object size
What is a resolving power of a microscope
The minimum distance to appear as seperate objects
How does a greater resolution effect clarity
The greater resolution, the greater the clarity
What does clarity mean in context of resolution
Clear and precise
What does the resolving power of a microscope depend on
The wavelength or form of radiation used by the microscope
What are the rules you have to follow when drawing microscope slides specimens
-use a pencil, -draw only lines you see (no shading/colouring), -each circular diagram (field of view) should be a third of a page in size, -if the cells are similar/repetitive then draw about 4-5 only
What is a Stage micrometer
A physical slide with a ruler
What is an eyepiece graticule?
A small piece of glass with a measurement scale on its surface that fits inside a microscope eyepiece
How to keep a record of microscope slide specimens?
Record the magnification, name of specimen, date of observations
What is calibration
A comparison of the scale on the eyepiece graticule/reticle with the scale on a stage micrometer
