Microscopes Flashcards
Define cell
The smallest structural and functional unit of living organisms, which are capable of independent existence and reproduction.
The formula for magnification…
Magnification=image size/ actual size(um)
Magnification
The degree to which the size of an image is larger than the viewed specimen itself
Or
The increase in the size of a specimen to produce a magnified image (which can be real or virtual)
Define resolution
The degree to which it is possible to distinguish between two objects (adjacent points) that are very close together
How to work out the limit of resolution
Approximately half the wavelength of the radiation used
Cell theory
- all living things made of cells
- cells are the smallest independent unit of life
- new cells formed by division of pre-existing cells
- contain hereditary information passed on to new cells
- organisms made of one cell (unicellular e.g.amoeba) or multicellular (e.g. Humans)
What are the two main types of microscopes
The light (optical/compound) microscope The electron microscope
What are the two different types of electron microscopes?
The scanning electron microscope
The transmission electron microscope
What does magnification do to the resolution?
