microscopes Flashcards
1
Q
how do electron microscopes work?
A
-uses beams of electrons instead of light
2
Q
an advantage of electron microscopes?
A
-possible to get much larger magnifications
3
Q
a disadvantage of electron microscopes?
A
- can only be used to view dead tissue
4
Q
how do light microscopes work?
A
-they allow you to see the image because light passes through it
5
Q
disadvantage of light microscopes?
A
-impossible to magnify an image by more than x1000 due to the properties of light
6
Q
what is biological staining?
an example of 2?
A
-used to help see cells in greater detail
- iodine solution, used mostly for plant cells
- methylene blue, used mostly for animal cells
7
Q
how to prepare a slide? step by step…
A
- clip slide onto stage
- set to the lowest magnification by the objective lense
- focus using the coarse focusing knob
- focus more using the fine focus
- set to highest magnification using fine focus
- re-focus
8
Q
how to work out the total magnification?
A
eye piece lens X objective lens
