Microscope Flashcards
What is the purpose of the ocular lens
The eye piece magnifies the imagr produced by the objective before rays of light reach the eye
What is another name for the ocular lens
Eyepiece
What does the body tube do?
Light passes from the objective, though the body tube to the eye piece. The tube is black inside to prevent reflection of light
Where is the revolving nose piece
Above tge objectives, to rotate them
What are the objective’s magnifications and colours
4x
10x
40x
100x
What holds the specimen still?
Stage clips
What magnifies the light source
Diaphragm
What is the purpose of the two adjustment knob
Coarse is to move the stage in large movement
Fine adjustment is for smaller movement
Discuss the base
Its made of metal and its usually heavy. Must be firm to prevent the optic parts from vibrating
Where/how shoukd a microscope be carried
At the arm, with your arm holding it at the bas furmly against your chest
Discuss the stage
Its flat and has an opening in the center. The light beam passes through here
What is a wet mouth?
When a drop of water is placed on the slide then the specimen
- to improve translucency
- to flatten tge sample
- to reduce refraction between different media
How do you prepare a wet mouth
- Add a water drop on the slide
- place specimen in the water
- add a cover slip so it touches the water’s edge
- slowly lower the slip to reduce bubbles being trapped or foam
What is an irrigation slide
When we add a stain at one side of the coverslip and paper towl at the other end to draw it into tge slide
What are two objectives for preparing a microscope slide
- how to prepare a wet mouth
- why a specimen is wetmouthed
