Microscope Flashcards
What is a light microscope?
A microscope is used to view objects that are too small to be seen by eyesight alone.
What does the term ‘magnification’ mean
how many times larger the object appears to be when viewed under the microscope.

What are cells
Living things are made of cells. Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things.
3 main parts of an animal cell
• A cell membrane
• A nucleus
• Cytoplasm.
What is a cell membrane
The cell membrane is a very thin layer that surrounds the cell. Its function (i.e. what it does) is to hold the cell contents in place and control what passes into and out of the cell.
What is a nucleus
The nucleus is normally round.
Its function is to act as the control centre of the cell.
What is a cytoplasm
Cytoplasm is a watery liquid found between the nucleus and the cell membrane.
Its functions are to carry out some cell reactions and to support tiny cell structures.
What are the 5 main parts of animal cells
• A cell wall
• A cell membrane
• cytoplasm
• A vacuole.
• Anucleus
What is a cell wall
A cell wall is found outside the cell membrane in plant cells.
The function of the cell wall is to give strength to the plant cell.
What is the vacuole
A vacuole contains liquid. If the vacuole is full of liquid, it forces the cytoplasm to push out against the cell wall
Function of cell membrane
Retains cell contents
Controls what passes in and out of the cell
Function of nucleus
The control centre of the cell
Function of cytoplasm
Carries out some cell reactions
Supports tiny cell structures
Function of Mitochondrion
Supplies energy to the cell (by respiration)
Function of cell wall
Gives strength to the cell
Function of chloroplast
Makes food (by photosynthesis)
Function of vacuole
Gives strength to the cell
