Micronutrients Flashcards
Standard dose and route of Ascorbic Acid
500mg with a max dosed of 50g/Week (50,000 milligrams) given IVP over 1-3 minutes.
Nursing consideration for giving ascorbic acid
Doses over 2g may not be given IVP and must be diluted
High Doses (HDIVC) requires titration (see protocol)
Must be administered 15 minutes apart from Glutathione due to opposing pH’s
How does Ascorbic acid (Vit C) work
Reduces oxidative damage caused by stress
Has great antihistamine (in the case of seasonal allergies) and antioxidant properties and plays an important role in immune function
What are the antioxidant actions of Ascorbic acid?
Vitamin C lessens triggers of inflammation by getting rid of free radicals that damage cells, regulates CRP, and detoxifies homocysteine which are both known to cause inflammation
What are 6 ways Vit C administration May help?
May help boost immune system
May help prevent or treat symptoms of the common cold and other infections such as stomach ulcers (H pylori), other viral illnesses, acne and other skin conditions
May help improve physical endurance and slow the aging process
Can help increase the absorption of iron in foods (helpful in anemia)
have been used to counter negative effects of chemotherapy
May help manage symptoms of autoimmune disorders (Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia) by stimulating glucocorticoid activity
Considerations and contraindications for ascorbic acid (Vitamins C)
Considerations: Adderall since it may decrease efficacy of medication
Contraindications: First trimester of pregnancy
What B vitamins are in B complex
B1, B2, B3, B5, B6
What is the standard dose and route of B complex.
1ml with a max dose of 2ml per week give IV or IM. IV dilution in at least 100mL of NS or LR given by gravity.
What are the nursing considerations for giving B complex.
If given rapidly, it can cause severe abdominal cramping, nausea, light-headedness, & diaphoresis. Usually mixed in an IVF bag.
Inform clients that they may have a vitamin taste in their mouth - this is from B Complex and the presence of a rich supply of blood vessels under the tongue
Max Dose does NOT apply to B5 & B6 Max Doses
Why is B complex given
Essential nutrients help convert food to fuel and allow us to stay energized during the day
Helpful in those with malabsorption issues (Crohn’s, celiac disease) since B vitamins are mostly sourced through the diet
Helpful in hangover recovery - B vitamins help break down the by-product of alcohol
How does Vit B1 aid in daily life?
Vitamin B1 is the anti stress vitamin.
Helps the body to make new cells and helps protect the immune system.
B1 also helps by breaking down simple carbohydrates.
What is Vitamin B2?
The growth vitamin, B2 helps in RBC production and allows oxygen to be transported in and be used by the body. Vit B2 also works as an antioxidant fighting free radicals responsible for inflammation.
What is vitamin B3?
B3 - Niacin - “Anti-cholesterol vitamin”
Helps regulate blood sugar by processing body fat
Helps boost HDL (good cholesterol) - the higher the HDL, the lower the risk of heart disease.
On occasion vitamin B3 can cause warmth or a flushing sensation (which is normal, especially if this is given IVP); give B-complex much slower in the event that this has to be given IVP
What is Vitamin B5
B5 - Pantothenic Acid - “Energy vitamin”
Helps with energy production by breaking down carbs and fat
Helps with generation of sex hormones
Helps promote healthy skin and reduce signs of aging (by helping retain moisture)
What is B6?
B6 - Pyridoxine - “Brain vitamin”
Helps regulate mood and may aid in sleep disorders
Helps regulate homocysteine levels in the blood - an amino acid directly linked to heart disease
Essential for producing amino acids and in normal brain development and function
Studies suggest that it helps alleviate inflammation in autoimmune disorders such as Rheumatoid Arthritis.
