Microbiology - Symptoms Differentials Flashcards
What are the SX for Bacterial Sinusitis?
Inflammed sinuses. Thick, purulent nasal discharge, congestion, facial pain, headache.
Less common SX - toothache, halitosis (bad breath)
What are the SX for otitis media? When does it usually occur?
Inflammation of middle ear, Otalgia (ear pain), otorrhea (discharge), diminished hearing, fever. Usually occurs after a viral URTI.
What are the general SX for oral cavity infections?
Swelling of soft tissue along angle of jaw and neck or in oral cavity. May develop draining sinus tract with yellow granules pus (sulfur granules) and infection may spread to adjoining tissue.
What are the SX of Pharyngitis? What is absent?
Sore throat, fever, chills, abdominal pain, inflamed uvula, pharynx; enlarged tonsils with grayish-white patchy exudate (NO COUGH OR CONGESTION)
What are the SX of epiglottitis?
Inflamed epiglottis, SEVERE sore throat, fever, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) and muffle voice.
What are the SX of pneumonia? (general)
Infection of lung parenchyma, cough, fever, tachycardia, dyspnea, chest pain, increased RR and use of accessory muscles.
What are the SX of CA-Pneumonia (with gram stainable bacteria)?
Fever, dyspnea, productive cough, chest pain.
What are the SX of CA-Pneumonia (with atypical bacteria)?
Fever, dyspnea, chest pain and NON PRODUCTIVE COUGH, extra pulmonary findings are common.
What are the SX of Legionaire’s disease?
HIGH FEVER, chills, SLIGHT productive cough (SPUTUM MAY HAVE BLOOD), diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, confusion, changes in mental status
What are the SX of Pontiac Fever?
Malaise, fatigue, myalgias, fever and headache (mild and self limiting disease)
What are the SX of mycoplasma pneumoniae pnemonia?
Fever, malaise, headache, sore throat, nasal congestion, non-productive cough
What are the SX of chamydophila pneumonia? - atypical pneumonia
Fever, malaise, headache, sore throat, nasal congestion, non-productive cough
What are the SX of chlamydophila psittaci (psittacosis)? - atypical pneumonia
HIGH FEVER, chest pain, muscle aches, non productive cough, can produce severe pneumonia
What are the SX of francisella tularensis penumonia?
Non productive cough, dyspnea, chest pain
What is an important differential for hospital acquired pneumonia regarding the patients cough?
Likely unable to cough enough to provide a sputum sample for culture
What are the general SX of VAP?
Fever, PURULENT SECRETIONS, leukocytosis (increased WBC)
What are the SX of aspiration pneumonia?
Cough w/ purulent sputum, fever, chills, malaise, myalgias, dyspnea and chest pain
What are the SX of lung abscesses?
Cough w/ purulent sputum, fever, chest pain, night sweats, fatigue and anemia (common)
