Microbiology stuff Flashcards
What is a eukaryotic species
A group of closely related organisms that breed amongst themselves
What is a prokaryotic species
A population of cells with similar characteristics
What are prokaryotic clones and strains
Clones are a population of cells derived from a single cell, a strain is genetically different cells within a clone
What are viral species
Population of viruses with similar characterisitics that occupies a particular ecological niche
What does pathogenicity mean
The ability of a microbe to cause disease (used to describe species)
What does virulence mean
Degree of pathogenicity in a microorgansim
How do organisms cause damage?
Invasion and damage of host cells, toxin production, or body’s response to infection
Why do gram positive bacteria retain crystal violet
Thick layer of peptidoglycan
What colour do gram negative bacteria stain
red
How are bacteria classfied
Gram stain, phenotype, genotype, analytical methods like while cell lipids/proteins, cell wall
Other than cultures, how can you test/identify bacteria
Looking for antigens (ELISA, immunofluorescence), looking for antibodies (ELISA, CFT), looking for genome (PCR)
