Microbiology L4 Flashcards
What is hyphae?
Threadlike filaments that make up many-celled fungi (molds)
What are the two types of hyphae?
- Vegetative, that branch out and expand the fungi
- Reproductive, which produce fungal spores
What are rhizoids?
Anchoring hyphae that attach the fungus to surfaces
What are yeast, how do they reproduce?
Simple fungi usually composed of a single spherical cell, reproduce by budding
What are dimorphic fungi?
Fungi that can grow as either yeast or mould, depending on the temperature
What is a mycosis?
A fungal disease
What are dermaphytes?
Fungi that live on the skin hair, nails, or skin. Uses dead tissue keratin as a source of nutrients
What is a systemic mycosis?
A fungal disease that invades many organs of the body
What fungi can cause systemic mycosis?
- Aspergillus
- Blastomyces dermatitidis
- Cryptococcus neoforms
- Histoplasma capsulatum
- Sporothrix schenckii
- Malassezia (ear canals)
- Candia (skin, GI)
What is a virus?
A non-cellular particle with a central core of infective nucleic acid enclosed by a protective layer of protein (capsid)
How do viruses differ from living cells?
- not reproductive, can only replicate within a living cell
- only one type of nucleic acid
- much smaller
- cannot metabolize nutrients, incapable of biochemical reactions
What are the 2 different viral replication cycles?
- Lytic cycle
- Lysogenic cycle
Two types of bacterial antibiotic resistance?
- Inherent
- Aquired
