Microbiology Flashcards
What is splatter?
Splash
What is spatter
Large droplets
What does airborne mean?
Carried by air
What is aerosols?
Tiny particles in the air
What is immunizations?
Artificial immunity
What is gram+ and gram- from?
Bacteria
Gram negative or gram positive is more resistant to antibiotics?
Gram negative
Obligate anaerobic?
Needs oxygen to survive
Faculatative anaerobic?
With or without oxygen to survive
Microaerophiles?
Need oxygen
List the chain of infection?
Infectious agent, reservoirs, portals of exit, modes of transmission, portals of entry, susceptible host
How do you differentiatie between a mode of transmission and a route of entry?
Mode of transmission is how to microbe travels to the host, and the route of entry is how the microbe enters the host.
What is the concept of microbiology in healthcare?
Knowing Microbes exist, and how to prevent their spread
What are diseases caused by bacteria?
Tb, dpt, staphylococcal(staph infection), streptococcus mutans(streptococcus throat, dental cavities), chlamydia, oral thrush
What is a prion disease?
Affects both humans and animals. Brain damage
What are the viruses?
Mmr, polio, chicken pox, shingles, influenza, common cold
Can jot be treated with antibiotics
What are the routes of entry?
Inhalation, injection, abosrbtion
What is an asymptomatic person?
Someone who contracts a disease and doesn’t know they are infecting other. They show no symptoms
What is the goal of infection control?
To reduce or eliminate microorganisms
What does hep a, b, c, d, and e have in common?
They all affect the liver
What is HIV?
Destruction of the immune system. Can sometimes lead to aids
Why immunizations?
Strengthens our immunity
What are the 6 categories of how emerging diseases are spread?
Ecological, human demographics, technology, other changes
