microbiology Flashcards
Diseases caused by Group A streptococcus (GAS) - particularly Strep Pyogenes
- Scarlet fever
- Tonsillitis
- Erisypelas
- Cellulitis (image)
Gram -ve
- Neseirra
- Haemophilis SP (RTI)
- Spirochaetes (spiral-shaped bacteria)
e.g. Barrelia - too thin to see with gram stain
- E.coli
Cause of lime disease
Barrelia burgdoferi but spread by ticks
Staphylococci causing diseases - mainly staph aureus
- Carbuncle
- Impetigo (also by strep)
Carbuncle
Impetigo - caused by strep or staph
Target site of penicillins
Cell wall synthesis
Erythromycin MOA
protein sythesis - 50S inhibitor
Tetracyclin/Streptomycin and gentamycin MOA
Protein synthesis -30 inhibitor
Lyme disease
Chancre caused by Trepnema Pallidum (spirochaete)
Cause of TB
& what staining to use
- Mycobacteria Spp
- Ziehl Neelse stain - Bright red colour
- Unable to take up gram stain (acid fast) due to thick wax-like cell wall -
Identification and detection of virus
- Cannot be grown (unlike most pathogenic bacteria) •
- Detected using PCR - polymerase chain reaction: Need a probe for the sequence of interest, if detected can then be amplified and detected.
- Serological testing (early- IgM / late- igG)
- ELISA
Definition of parasite
- any living form which is – dependent on other living forms for survival, – causing some damage to the host
- Often used to describe Protozoa and Helminths only
How does one get helminths infection?
Contamination of water with human faeces
- has a negative impact on growth and development
