Microbiology π¬ Flashcards
Cocci
Round bacteria
Staphylococci
Bacteria bunch; Pus-forming bacterial cells.
Form as grape-like bunches or in clusters.
Present in abscesses, pustules and boils.
Some types wonβt cause infection but others could be fatal.
Streptococci
Long/chained bacteria; Pus-forming bacterial cells.
Form in long chains and can cause septicemia (sometimes called blood poisoning), strep throat, rheumatic fever and other serious infections
Diplococci
Bacteria thatβs in pairs;
Cause of certain infections, including pneumonia
Bacilli
Rod/bar shaped bacteria; Most common form of bacterial cells. Bacilli are bar- or rod-shaped cells that can produce a variety of diseases including tetanus, bacterial influenza, typhoid fever, tuberculosis and diphtheria
Spirilla
Spiral shaped bacteria; Cause highly contagious diseases such as syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease (STD); cholera; and Lyme disease
Bacteria
Microorganisms that can live on any surface. Can cause illness or disease. Can sometimes be treated with antibiotics.
Virus
Needs a living host to live. Cannot be treated with antibiotics.
Parasite
Can be internal or external. Comes in the form of small living creatures/bugs or worms.
Pathogenic
Pathogenic bacteria cause illness
Non pathogenic
Non pathogenic bacteria do not cause illness. Can be beneficial.
Active stage
Actively growing & spreading
Inactive stage
Inactive in growing or spreading; creates a spore & waits for appropriate environment/time to become active.
