Microbial Pathogenicity Flashcards
Virulence factor
Something that is able to cause or be a part of the disease state (could be a toxin - burst open the cell or destroy the membranes, could be an attachment protein- e.g. E.coli)
Pathogen
cause disease in human by parasitising it - live off the other organism (e.g. uses your cell and nutrients to reproduce e.coli)
Tissue tropism
Organisms usually adapted to survive in one particular environment or location
non pathogenic
Unlikely to cause disease (some have genes to produce the virulence factors and others do not)
Infectious
Spread throughout the population
Disease
Disorder with a specific cause and recognisable signs and symptoms
Infection
A disease caused by a pathogen
Pathogenicity
Ability to cause disease
Virulence
Pathogens power to cause severe disease
Communicable disease
An infection that is capable of spreading from person to person
Outbreak
An occurrence of disease clearly in excess of normal expectancy
Zoonosis (es)
An animal disease that can spread to humans
Vector
A living creature that can transmit infection from one host to another
Epidemiology
The study of distribution and determinants of disease in populations
Pyogenic
Pus forming
