Microbial metabolism Flashcards
What does catabolism require?
Sometimes O2
Energy comes from respiration and fermentation
What does anabolism require?
May have other synthetic metabolic pathways to produce primary and secondary metabolites
What are the types of microbial metabolism?
Heterotroph: obtain carbon and energy from organic compounds
Autotroph: obtain carbon from CO2 and energy via sunlight or oxidation of inorganic compounds
Explain the energy cycle
Photosynthetic organisms use anabolic reactions which synthesize sugars
Catabolism produces ATP sometimes NADH
What are the 3 fundamental pathways?
Glycolysis
Krebs cycle
Oxidative phosphorylation
Explain glycolysis
1 molecules of glucose into 2 molecules of pyruvate
Net production of 2 ATP and 2 NADH
What is the oxidative decarboxylation of pyruvate?
Pyruvate converted acetyl CoA to enter Krebs cycle
Generates NADH
What is cytochrome c oxidase?
Large transmembrane protein complex
Last enzyme in respiratory electron transport chain
What is the electron transport chain?
Series of redox electron transfer reactions
NADH oxidized to NAD+ generating H+
What is the anaerobic respiration: methanogens?
Use O2 electron receptor
Reduce O2 to methane
Responsible of farts
What is the anaerobic respiration: SRBs?
Alternative electron acceptor is sulphate
What is fermentation?
NADH produced during glycolysis used to reduce intermediate compounds
2 ATP per glucose
What is primary metabolism?
Major metabolic pathway involve energy production and release (catabolism)
Synthesize cell components (anabolism)
What is secondary metabolism?
Produce non-essential materials (anabolism)
Includes useful natural products (antibiotics)
