- Subtle -usually automatically and unconscious
- May seem innocuous to nontarget group, but can be harmful
- A “constant reality” to culturally diverse groups
Micro assault
- blatant verbal, nonverbal or environmental attack intended to convey discriminatory and biased sentiments (spic, fag)
- old fashioned racism
- examples: “fags get a room” or flaunting the swasktika
Micro insult
Unintentional behaviors or verbal comments that convey rudeness or insensitivity or demean a persons racial heritage or identity or gender or sexual orientation
- ex: using the word gay in derogatory way
Or how did an employee get a job?
Micro invalidation
Verbal comments or behaviors that exclude or negate or dismiss the psychological thoughts feelings or experiential reality of the targeted group
- ex: you are making too big of deal about how you were treated or only seeing white people in the waiting room or white people dismissing racist acts

Trivializing the impact of a micro aggression by a majority group member can be automatic, defensive reaction to avoid feeling blamed and guilty
That perpetrators tend to deny the existence of a micro aggression only serves to compound their detrimental effects

- Terminate prematurely
- micro aggressions may lie at the core of the problem
- therapists must be credible
- effective counseling occurs with strong working alliance
