Anadiplosis
Repeating the last word of a clause at the beginning of the next clause.
Anapodoton
Deliberately creating a sentence fragment by the omission of a clause.
generally used for set phrases when it is tedious to write out the whole phrase e.g. “When in Rome [do as the Romans do]”
Anthimeria
Using a different part of speech to act as another, such as a verb for a noun, or a noun for a verb, or an adjective as a verb, etc.
e.g. he sang his didn’t, he danced his did.”
Antimetabole
Repetition in reverse order
e.g. “one should eat to live, not live to eat.”
often overlaps with chiasmus
Apophasis
mentioning something by not mentioning it
e.g. “I would NEVER call him evil”
Antithesis
Contrary ideas expressed in a balanced sentence. It can be a contrast of opposites.
e.g. “evil men fear justice, good men cherish it”
Aphorism
A pithy, instructive statement or truism, like a maxim or adage.
e.g. “actions speak louder than words”
