What is the difference between Diegetic & Non-Diegetic Sound?
DIEGETIC = Coming from a source on-screen; the characters can hear it (eg. ambient sound)
NON-DIEGETIC = Coming from an outside, non-narrative source (eg. soundtrack); the characters can’t hear it
What are FOLEY SOUND EFFECTS?
Sound effects recorded separately for ambient sound included in post-production editing
What is the difference between DIALOGUE, MONOLOGUE & VOICE-OVER?
Dialogue = speech exchanged between characters
Monologue = a long, extended piece of speech delivered by a character
Voice-over = narrated, non-diegetic dialogue added over a narrative
What is a LEITMOTIF?
A recurrent theme (eg. a piece of music) associated with a particular character, place, or idea in the narrative
What does CONTRAPUNTAL SOUND mean?
Sound (eg. music) that tonally juxtaposes with what we see on-screen
