Micro-biology Flashcards
Bacteria and Fungi.
What is Microbiology
The study of micro-organisms.
What is an example of harmful bacteria?
Disease causing, e.g Salmonella.
What is an example of beneficial bacteria?
Food preservation
What is an example of harmful fungi?
Poisonous fungi e.g bread mold.
What is an example of beneficial fungi?
Food preservation e.g cheese making.
Is rhizopous a uni or multicellular fungus?
Multicellular.
Lable the parts of rhizopus
Sporangium, rhizoids, spores and sporangiophores.
Is yeast a uni or multicellular fungus?
Unicellular.
Lable the parts of yeast:
Nucleus, cell wall, cell membrane, mitochondria, cytoplasm.
Label the parts of a bacteria cell:
Chromosome, cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, plasmid, flagellum.
What are the differences between bacteria and fungi?
Bacteria: Unicellular, no nucleus.
Fungi: Multi or Unicellular, nucleus.
Name 2 characteristics of viruses
-They are so small they can’t be seen under a microscope.
- They can’t reproduce in their own, only inside living cells.
Name 2 characteristics of agar:
-A jelly like substance.
-A growth medium for bacteria and fungi.
-Extracted from the cell walls of algae.
What is biotechnology?
The use of microorganisms to make useful products.
Biotechnology examples:
- Cheese making.
- Making vaccines and antibiotics.
- Botox.
- Insulin.
