The treaty of Versailles
The treaty of Versailles was made by three people in order to punish Germany for losing the war. The punishments of this went on for many years and ended up creating ww2. The people were desperate, this is where Hitler came in and promised the German people everything back. He became chancellor and slowly started to disobey the rules. once they invaded Poland France and England declared war.

What does GARGLE stand for
GARGLE was the list of things in the treaty that Germany had to agree to they were
G: guilt
A: Armed forces (weakened army)
R: Reparations (6.6 billion to the winners)
G: German Territories ( lost oversea empire and Alsace Lorraine)
LE: League of Nations (international police force that was set up, Germany wasn’t allowed to join)
what were George Clemenceau’s motives
George Clemenceau was the one who wanted to put all the harsh punishments on Germany for revenge:
- The war was fought in France, lots of land, buildings and railways were destroyed
- Over a million soldiers died
- It was the second time in 50 years that Germany had invaded their land
What were Woodrow Wilson’s motives
USA didn’t have much of a motive and didn’t want harsh punishments as they only lost 116,000 soldiers and joined the war in 1917. They just wanted to trade with Germany
What were David Lloyd George’s Motives
George wanted punishments but still needed to trade with Germany:
- The British people wanted Germany to have harsh punishments
- nearly 1 million soldiers died
- The war cost a huge amount of money
What were the benefits of putting harsh punishments on Germany
Giving Germany harsh punishments will weaken Germany and reduce the chances of them attacking neighbouring countries again. France wanted it for revenge.
What were the disadvantages of putting harsh punishments on Germany
this may anger Germany even more and give them thirst for revenge. this may stop countries like England and America from trading with them.
