Michaelmas Flashcards
What 5 organelles in a animal cell
Nucleus, mitochondria, ribosomes, cell membrane and cytoplasm
Function of a nucleus
Controls the cell and contains genetic material (DNA)
Function of mitochondria
This is where respiration takes place
Function of ribosomes
This is where protein synthesis happens
Function of cytoplasm
This is a ‘jelly-like’ substance where the chemical reactions in the cell take place.
Function of cell membrane
This is a barrier around the cell. It controls what can come in and out of the cell
What are the eight organelles in a plant cell?
Chloroplasts, vacuole, cell wall, nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria, and ribosomes
Function of chloroplast
This is where photosynthesis happens. Chloroplasts contain green substance called chlorophyll which traps energy transferred from the Sun.
Function of vacuole
This contains a water liquid called cell sap. It keeps the cell firm.
Function of cell wall
This strengthens the cell and provide support. It is made of a tough fibre cord cellulose which makes the wall rigid.
What is a specialized cell?
They are cells adapted so they are suited to carrying out particular jobs
What are nerve cells and how have they adapted?
They carry electrical impulses around your body.
They are long and thin and have conncections at each end where they can join to other nerve cells, allowing them to transmit messages around the body
What is a red blood cell and its adaptations
They transport oxygen around the body. They contain haemoglobin, a red pigment that joins to oxygen. They have no nucleus. They also have a disc-like shape that increases surface area and helps with carrying oxygen.
Reproductive cells and their adaptations
Sperm cells carry male genetic material. They have a streamlined head and long tail allowing them to move through liquid. Lots of mitochondria for energy to swim. When it meets an egg cell, the head of the sperm burrows into the egg. This then can reproduce.
What is diffusion
The movement of particles from a place of high concentration to low concentation
