MI2011: Industrial Microbiology Flashcards
Briefly explain hydrocarbon decomposition to clean up oil spill
- anaerobic environment and sulfate = degradation sulfate reducing bacteria
- oil acts as a carbon source
- bacteria migrate towards oil
- oil oxidised aerobically to CO2
- to increase bacterial growth add nitrate and phosphorus
What is the purpose of waste water treatment
- removal of pathogens
- prevention of pollution of surface waters
- reduce suspended solids and BOD
What does BOD test for in waste water treatment
gives insight into the demand for oxygen and the approximation of bacteria present in water
By reducing BOD we…..
reduce the ability of bacteria to produce
What are the 3 phases of wastewater treatment
- Primary sedimentation
- Secondary treatment
- Tertiary treatment
Primary sedimentation
Physical process of removing floating and settling solids
Secondary treatment
Aerobic or Anaerobic.
Aerobic: filter and activated sludge
Anaerobic: denitrification and high nutrient waste
Tertiary treatment
Flocculation
Sand filtration
Disinfection
or UV light or addition of chlorine
Activated sludge
known bacteria that rapidly utilise nutrients settle
Carbon cycle
action of acetogenic and methanogenic bacteria (sympatry)
What would happen if we did not control waste water
- destroy ecosystems
- uncontrolled environmental pathogens replicate easily
