MFR Flashcards
tensegrity
- a structural system composed of balance btw tension and compression
- acts as a whole system so that any internal or external forces acting on them are transmitted to all elements of the structure equally, causing it to deform symmetrically rather than collapse
wolffs law
bone grows and remodels in response to the forces that are placed upon it
hookes law
extension of a spring is in direct proportion with load as long as it does not exceed the elastic limit
newtons 3rd law
action = reaction
roles of fascia
- cellular respiration
- elimination
- metabolism
- fluid and lymph flow
- repair by deposition of repair tissue
- conservation of body heat
- fat storage
- cellular health and immune system
tranverse planes
- occipitoatlantal area
- cervicothoracic area
- thoracolumbar area
- lumbosacral area
deep vs superficail fascia
deep: more dense, react faster
more proprioceptive and pain power/receptors
common compensatory pattern
L/R/L/R
uncommon compensatory pattern
R/L/R/L
uncompensated compensatory pattern
fascial preferences do not alternate
often traumatic origin
therapeutic effects of MFR
- relieve pain
- restore func
- inc ROM
- improve motor performance
- restore body equilibrium
- promote relaxation and a sense of well-being
- improve digestion, absorption and elimination
- improve sleep
- dec anxiety
- dec muscle activity & vigor after stressful exercise or performance
MFR contraindication global
- fever
- systemic infection
- alcohol and recreational drug use
- colds and flus that are contagious
- circulatory cond
- severe undiagnosed swelling/pain
- undiagnosed lumps
- deep vein thrombosis and aneurysm
- rapid weigth loss
- undiagnosed breathing dif
- undiagnosed bowel and bladder issues
local MFR contraindications

- suture or stitches
- healing scars
- healing fx
- skin hypersensitivity/inflammation
- infectious skin cond or sunburn
- radiation therapy
- localized infection
- cortisol therapy
- varicoseveins
- osteoporosis or advanced degenerative changes
MFR an dpregnancy
- after 1st trimester
- abdominal work is contraindicated
- better placed on left side
MFR and scar tissue
after 6-8 weeks
pt response
- burning under the skin as cross-links broken down
- change in breathing
- sweating
- therapeutic pain
- emotional response possible
what pt do after mfr
hydrate
stretch, strength, proprio
tissue mobility vs motility
mobility: the ability of tissue to move
motility: freedom of a tissue to move
active myofascial trigger points
focus of hyperirritability in the muscle or its fascia that is symptomatic w/ respect to pain: it refers a pattern of pain at rest and/or in motion that is specific for the muscle
passive or latent myofascial tp
hyperiritability in the muscle or its fascia that is clinically quiet w/ respect to spontaneous pain; it is however painful when palpated
satellite or associated myofascial tp
a focus of hyperirritability in the muscle or its fascia that dev in response to compensatory overload, shortened range or referred
superficial back line (fascia lines)
plantarfascia, plantar surface of toes to calcareous, gastroc, h/s, sacrotub lig, lumbosacral fascial, erector spinal, nuchal lig, scalp fascia
superficial front line (fascia lines)
ant compartment and periosteum of tibia, rec fem, rectus abdominis and pectorialis, sternal fascisa, SCOM
Lateral line (fascial lines)
peroneal, IT tract, tfl, glut max, ext and internal obliques, quad lumborum, ext and int intercostals, splenius cervicis, iliocostalis cervicis, scom, deeper scalenes
