Mexico Civil Society Flashcards
What is clientelism?
Exchange of goods and services for political support (quid pro quo).
Why is clientelism important in Mexico?
It has long been the form of political participation in Mexico that anyone can participate in. A key reason why the PRI dominated for so long.
How is politics changing in Mexico?
Increasing number of people are seeking to negotiate with the government based on citizenship rights. Transparency and an increasingly independent media has made public opinion more important.
What is accommodation?
Informal agreement between a government and an interest group in response to the group’s concerns.
How has accommodation benefited Mexico?
It has minimized serious conflict that can threaten stability.
What is the downside to accommodation?
It can promote inequities. (development strategies benefit elite business people, union bosses controlled the rank and file to benefit their own power in negotiating with the government.)
Why has the power of union bosses declined?
Unions are weaker, union members are demanding greater democratization, and the PRI no longer monopolizes government.
How has social activism changed in Mexico?
Traditionally activism has focused on economic redistribution instead of divisive social issues (such as abortion and gay rights), but that is changing.
How has technology impacted Mexican politics?
As internet access has proliferated major candidates routinely communicate via social media and have actively sought to attract Twitter followers. Gaffes by candidates have quickly gone viral and impacted popularity.
