Spain gave its colony of Florida to the U.S. and agreed to the Sabine River as the eastern boundary of Texas. In return, the U.S. surrendered all claims to Texas. The Neutral Ground is now in U.S. territory.

A

Philip Nolan was a filibuster who claimed to be working in Texas, capturing and selling wild horses.

A

Spanish authorities though he was a soy working for General James Wilkins and warned him to stay out of Texas, but he didn’t obey. In March 1801, Nolan and his men refused to surrender to soldiers and a fight broke out. Philip died in the battle.

  1. Distance- Spain was too far away to help citizens in New Spain.
  2. Taxes- Spanish King forced colonists to pay heavy taxes and he took money from their churches.
  3. Poverty- Colonists were excluded from the best job, and most citizens were in poverty because of the class system.
