Adams-Onis Treaty
In 1819, the Adams-Onis Treaty was signed by the U.S. and Spain declaring that their new border would be at the Sabine River and that the U.S. would get Florida if they promised to leave Texas alone.
The Battle of Medina
In 1813, the Spanish forces battled the Republic Army. This was the bloodiest battle in Texas history. The result of it was that Texas remained under Spanish rule for another seven years.
Bernardo de Galvez
The military governor of Louisiana who allowed American ships to use ports in New Orleans, gave money and supplies to American troops and led Spanish soldiers against the British along the coast.
The Constitution of 1824
A constitution that was written by Federalists that directly affected Texas. Texas was not a separate state due to its small population. Coahuila y Tejas was a state that was created (part of it was Texas).
Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla
In 1810 Father Hidalgo called Mexican settlers to fight for independence. He was called the Father of Mexican Independence.
Jose Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara
In 1811, Jose Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara traveled to the U.S. to help free Texas from Spanish rule. He met Augustus Magee and together they created the Republic Army of the North.
James Long
After a group declared Texas independent, they elected him as president. He was shot and killed by a guard 6 months later. He was the last filibuster in Texas.
The Louisiana Purchase
In 1803 the U.S. bought the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million. The size of the U.S. nearly doubled.
Stephen F. Austin
His nickname is the Father of Texas because he helped settle Anglo Americans in his settlement. He chose the area between the Colorado and Brazos Rivers because the area had rich soil, access to water, and a warm climate. He was the first empresario in Texas and the main city of his colony was San Felipe de Austin.
Moses Austin
His nickname is the Grandfather of Texas because of his idea to bring Anglo Americans to settle in Texas. He believed Anglo Americans would want to move to Texas for its cheap land.
The Grito de Dolores
The Grito de Dolores was a speech given in 1810 by Father Hidalgo calling Mexican settlers to fight for independence from Spain.
Phillip Nolen
He was significant because he was the first filibuster in Texas. He came to Texas to capture wild horses. They thought he was an American spy.
Marques de Rubi
After the Seven Years’ War, King Charles III sent Marques de Rubi to inspect all missions to see if they were still necessary. He advised that they abandon all missions except San Antonio and Golid and that all settlers in East Texas should move to San Antonio.
Iturbide’s Plan (de Iguala)
They would declare Mexico independent from Spain, Mexican people would have equal rights, and Catholicism would become the official religion in Mexico.
The Neutral Ground
The Neutral Ground is the land between where the U.S. and Spain thought the border was. The problem was that no one patrolled this territory.
