The Battle of Medina (“The BLOODIEST Battle in Texas History”)
August 1813, the Republican Army battled Spanish forces south of San Antonio at the Medina River. Commanded by General Arredondo, the Spanish overwhelmed the Republican Army. They were all killed during the battle or executed after it.
The Long
Expedition
(THE LAST FILIBUSTER IN TEXAS)
The group declared Texas independent and elected Dr. James Long as its president. After a string of battles, Long and his men were surrounded by the Spanish Army. Long was taken to a Mexican prison where he was shot and killed by a guard 6 months later.
Treaty of Cordoba
August 21, 1821- The Treaty of Cordoba was signed, declaring Mexico independent from Spain.

Land agents that helped recruit and bring in settlers to an area
Stephen F. Austin
“Father of Texas”
became the first empresario in Texas, when he took over for his father.
Moses Austin
“Grandfather of Texas”
came up with an idea to bring Anglo American families to settle in Texas. He got permission, but he died before he could get families to Texas.
Mexican Constitution of 1824
- Federal Republic (Elect people)
- Catholicism is the official religion
- Divided Mexico into 19 states and 4 territories
- Created the state of Coahuila y Tejas, merging the two provinces (Texas is NOT a separate state due to the small population)
