Metronidazole indications
Use against anaerobic bacteria and certain parasites
Metronidazole physiologic action
Selectively blocks some of the functions within bacterial cell walls and the parasites resulting in death
Metronidazole side effects
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, appetite loss, furrowed tongue, metallic taste,
Metronidazole nursing implications
Assess for infection, culture and sensitivity
Monitor I and O especially if on sodium restriction
May alter serum AST, ALT, and LDH???
Metronidazole teaching
Avoid alcohol
Notify provider of rash
May cause a metallic taste
Use good oral hygiene, sugarless gum or candy
Notify provider of signs and symptoms of superinfection: black furry tongue, vaginal itching or discharge, loose or foul smelling stool.

Hypersensitivity
