35
Q

if 10 is the DF, what is the FC

A

60/ DF = 60/10 = 6 is the FC

36
Q

if 15 is the DF, what is the FC

A

60/ DF = 60/15 = 4 is the FC

37
Q

if 20 is the DF, what is the FC

A

60/ DF = 60/20 = 3 is the FC

38
Q

if 60 is the DF, what is the FC

A

60/ DF = 60/60 = 1 is the FC

39
Q

to get gtt/min to ml/hour, what do you do?

A

if you want milliliters, multiply by the flow conversion (remember: milliliters - multiply)

40
Q

to get mL/hours to gtt/min, what do you do?

A

if you want drops, divide by the flow conversion (remember: drops - divide)

41
Q

The freezing point of water is ___ Centigrade/Celsius

A

zero (0) degrees Centigrade/Celsius

42
Q

The freezing point of water is ___ degrees Fahrenheit.

A

32 degrees Fahrenheit

43
Q

0 degrees Centigrade = ? degrees Fahrenheit

A

32 degrees Fahrenheit

44
Q

the boiling point of water is ___ degrees Centigrade/Celsius

A

100 degrees Centigrade/Celsius

45
Q

the boiling point of water is ___ degrees Fahrenheit

A

212 degrees Fahrenheit

46
Q

100 degrees Centigrade = ___ degrees Fahrenheit

A

212 degrees Fahrenheit

47
Q

Conversion of Fahrenheit temperature to Centigrade temperature

A

5/9 x (F-32) = Temperature in Centigrade

48
Q

Conversion of Centigrade/Celsius temperature to Fahrenheit

A

9/5 C + 32 = F

49
Q

where is the deltoid muscle?

A

in the arm

50
Q

why should Deep IM injections be used on larger gluteal sites

A

the deltoid is a smaller muscle than the gluteal muscle; anything more than 1 mL of a clear liquid would hurt

51
Q

subcutaneous injections need to be in the ____ NOT muscle

A

fatty tissue

52
Q

what angle is used and what inch needle is used for subcutaneous injections for adults

A

in adults a 45

degree angle and a 5/8 to 1 inch needle are used for subcutaneous injections

53
Q

in people who are very thin, ____ needle is used

A

shorter; subcutaneous injections should NOT be hitting muscle or bone

54
Q

what inch needle is used for newborns

A

5/8 inch needles

55
Q

for subcutaneous injections, the fatty tissue over the ____ muscle is used

A

anterolateral thigh muscle

56
Q

what angle of administration is used for newborn for subcutaneous injections

A

45 degrees, so the medication is given subcutaneously and not into muscle of the newborn

57
Q

for intramuscular injections, ____ is used

A

vastus lateralis

58
Q

what angle of administration is used for intramuscular injections

A

90 degrees so that the medication reaches the muscle not the subcutaneous tissues of the newborn

59
Q

is gluteal muscle used for newborn?

A

NO

60
Q

the higher the gauge of a needle, the ____ it is

A

smaller

For example, a 25 gauge
needle that may be used for administration of vaccines into the deltoid of an adult
is smaller (narrower) than a 22 gauge needle that might be used for a deep IM
injection into the gluteal muscles. An 18 gauge needle that might be used for
intravenous blood administration is larger (bigger bore size) than a needle with a
higher gauge.

61
Q

is needle length different from the size of a needle or needle gauge?

A

Needle LENGTH is DIFFERENT from the size of a needle or needle gauge.

A 5/8 inch long needle is short (regardless of the size or needle gauge). It is
appropriate for subcutaneous injections or intramuscular injections in newborns.
Newborns are little. For adults, longer needles are needed for example, for
intramuscular and especially deep intramuscular injections.

62
Q

A one milliliter syringe and an insulin syringe are different!!!!

A

insulin syringes are presented in units

63
Q

Any medication that comes in a pre-filled syringe ALSO needs to be
checked carefully. NEVER ASSUME EVERYTHING IS ACCURATE! What are the key points to be confirmed?

A

Is this the correct medication and dosage for this patient? Will the entire syringe be administered to this patient or does part of the medication need to be wasted first? Any medication that is wasted needs to be
witnessed while being discarded.

64
Q

For infection control and accurate dosing
reasons, it is NOT okay to use the same syringe and a different needle between
patients. This should NOT be done!!!!

A

Multiple dose vials are drawn into

separate needles and syringes.
