Metrological Measurements Flashcards
What are metrological measurements
Surface measurements
Rawindsondes
Radar
Satellite
Def of meteorological measurements
Weather elements are measured routinely around the globe, the data are used to create weather maps and to examine large scale weather systems
Global scale measurements are called?
Studies using the measurements are called?
Synoptic
Synoptic measurements
Time for weather maps
Meteorological measurements are made based on Universal Coordinated Time (UTC)
Other names for UTC?
Greenwich meridian time or Zulu
GMT or Z
Standard time zones?
How do you calculate local time?
Pacific time zone = UTC-8 hrs
Eastern time zone
Alaska time zone
Hawaii time zone
Subtract a certain number of hours from the UTC
Two types of measurements?
What are they?
Direct method: taken in place, instruments in direct contact with atmospheric property
Indirect method: measured from a distance or remote sensing
Measuring pressure?
What are the types
Barometers are used
Mercury barometer and aneroid barometer
What measures humidity
Hygrometers
Radiosondes
Sometimes a helium filled balloon carrying instruments to record the weather in troposphere
Tethersondes
Similar to radiosondes except the balloon is tethered to and object on the ground
Radar system consists of?
A transmitter which emits pulses of electromagnetic radiation and a receiver that measures characteristics of the radiation scattered back to the radar site
Sources of backscattering?
Raindrops, hail, snow, bugs, dust, ground targets, debris
Doppler radars?
Provide precipitation information and wind information
Weather satellites?
Used to acquire and provide information about cloud coverage and structure of weather systems over land and ocean
