Metis Resistances Questions Flashcards
Why was the creation of the Selkirk Settlement an area of contention for the Metis?
Thomas Selkirk came and bought 300 000 square kilometres of land where Metis and Scottish fur traders were originally settled. This upset them because they were not consulted about this new community in their home. They believed the new settlers would get in the way of their hunting lifestyle and food supplies
For what reasons is the seven oaks incident significant?
The seven oaks incident is where Robert sample attempted to resettle in Assiniboia so when a group of Metis ran into him and 20 of his men they killed them all. Cause from dispute between Hudsons Bay Company and North West Company.
Significant because it sets up Metis identity (first time they fought as a group together for a common cause)
Forced the two rival fur trading companies to reconsider their hostility and competition with eachother
After Selkirks death the two companies merged
How did the Selkirk Treaty lead to further discontent with the Metis and settlers in the Red River area of Assiniboia? What was the result of this conflict?
The Metis and aboriginals got angered because the Hudsons bay company took over Selkirks land after his death and the Hudsons bay gave it to the dominion of Canada and new European settlers would be coming in and would violate their land rights and disrupt their way of life. The Metis believed they should have got the land after Selkirk died not the Company
This led to the Red River Revellion in 1869-1870
What are the noticeable differences between the Metis of the east and the Metis of the west?
East- assimilate and don’t form their own identity
West- form identity from Selkirk treaty gongshow and earn the Metis name
How did the new Metis identity form from the fur trade and create a sense of nationalism for this new group?
The fur trade moving west had many French Canadian men marrying aboriginal women which resulted in the mix blood Metis people.
This incorporated aspects of both cultures in the offspring
What is the Middle World Perspective and does this perspective still apply to the Metis?
The Metis way of life.
Rejected by Europeans and First Nations so create their own culture based off both.
Perspective of being both but rejected by both
I believe it still applies but not to the same extent as it did back them because now we don’t dis include Metis or aboriginals as much and we live with them
Has the history of the Metis in Canada given the Metis a right to seek recognition of status and benefits like those of treaties the First Nations receive? Explain.
I believe they have because everyone deserves to be recognized for their culture and who they are because they can’t change that. Also they were a big part of our history
What is the most important part of Metis history in promoting a sense of nationalism and identity?
(Opinion)
Battle of seven oaks where they fight together for the first time
What is significant about these events: Battle of duck lake Looting of Battleford Frog Lake Massacre Battle of Fort Pitt Battle of Fish Creek Battle of Cut Knife Battle of Batoche
BODL- initial engagement of the northwest rebellion (Metis victory)
LOB- Cree bands raided farms and stores which leads to Metis being blamed (even though they’re different causes)
FLM- massacre that prompted Canadian government to take notice of uprising. Leaders of massacre charged with treason
BOFP- Big Bear was not planning attack but was drawn into rebellion at frog lake, held police hostage
BOFC- major Metis victory that led Gen. Fredrick Middleton to halt his attack on batoche
BOCK- most successful battle during northwest rebellion.
BOB- Metis outnumbered and lost led to surrender of Louis Riel
Why did the Metis resist the westward expansion of Canada, and what were the consequences?
Two resistances
1869- Metis way of life was being disrupted, surveying land, people were settling in areas on Metis land and surveying them for grid system
Result: Manitoba Act (reason catholic education is still funded) Metis won
1885- much the same, had to do with opening railroad and trying to get treaties drafted in the province, settlers are moving into Metis territory again
Result: Metis lose, hardship, metis are forced on to road allowance territory
Was Louis Riel a real hero in the North West Resistance? Was anyone, First Nations or Metis?
It is a matter of perspective.
To the Metis he was a hero because they saw him protecting their rights from the Canadian government.
To the government he was a loose cannon who caused unnecessary uprising.
