Moderate to severe pain where administration of fentanyl and/or ketamine is inappropriate or unavailable
3
Q
Contraindications of methoxyflurane
A
- Known severe allergy
- Personal or family history of malignant hyperthermia
- Unable to obey commands
- Known renal impairment
- Has received methoxyflurane in the previous 7 days
4
Q
Cautions for methoxyflurane
A
- Aged 75 or over particularly in presence of illness, infection or dehydration as renal impairment is likely - methoxyflurane may worsen renal impairment
- Pre-eclampsia as renal impairment is likely
- Confined space
5
Q
Dosage for methoxyflurane
A
Child under 12 years old - maximum of 3ml (one dose)
Patient aged over 12 - maximum of 6ml (two doses)

- Dislike of the taste and smell
7
Q
Pharmacokinetics of methoxyflurane
A
- Approximately 20% is exhaled - the rest is metabolised in the liver
- One metabolite is fluoride ions which are associated with renal impairment in high concentrations
