DMARD for RA
Part of chemotherapy
Treat severe psoriasis
Mechanism of action
supresses the immune system and reduces inflammation
How often is methotrexate taken?
Once weekly
What should it be taken in conjunction with?
Folic acid
How long can methotrexate take to start working?
4-6m
How often will blood tests be needed for methotrexate?
Before, then every 2 weeks until therapy stabalised. Then every 2-3m.
What is given before starting methotrexate?
pnuemococcal vaccine
Main SE of methotrexate (5)
Mouth ulcers GI upset Increased risk of infection Alopecia Headache
what can long term use of methotrexate cause?
hepatic cirrhosis or pulmonary fibrosis
Important contraindication for methotrexate
MUST BE AVOIDED IN PREGNANCY
Advice around pregnancy and methotrexate
must use effective contraception for 3m after stopping (male and female)
Advice around infection and methotrexate
Any sign - stop the medication and go to A&E
Methotrexate and alcohol
Drink as little as possible
What shouldn’t be taken with methotrexate? (2)
NSAIDS and penicillin
