Methods to measure responses Flashcards

1
Q

What is the “classification” method

A
  • subjects are asked to select attributes which describe stimulus (nominal, non parametric data)
    -No attempts to standardize terms
ie. Juic is: sweet, sour, pulpy, thick etc.

Q

With classification, what should you consider when selecting terms?

A

Has to be based on the characteristics of the actual product

Q

What are the limitations of the “classification” method?

A
  1. Confusion: subjects can associate terms with goodness or badness (not objective)
  2. Caveats - ie there is pulp in the orange juice that was not included in the list of terms - panelist would have to describe

Q

What is the grading method?

A

Scaling that depends on expert grades who learn the scales used from other grades

Q

What is the “ranking” method?

A

When subjects recieve 3 or more samples to arrange in order of intensity need little training

Q

What are the limitations of “ranking”

A
  1. All products must be considered before a judgement is made
  2. Must specify characteristics and direction of ranking
  3. Data provides no indication of strength of attribute or magnitude

7
Q

What is the “scaling method”?

A

Use of numbers or words to express intensity (ie scale from 1 to 9)

8
Q

What does the validity of scaling depend on?

A

1 - selection of the appropriate scaling technique
2 - training of the panelist on how to use the specific scale

Q

What is universal scaling?

A
  • Considers all of the products/intensities theu have experienced as a reference
  • Rated on an absolute and universal basis

Q

What is product specific scaling?

A

Scaling where panelists only consider their experience within the selected product category (products from different categories cannot be intercompared)

Q

What is attribute specific scaling?

A

Where panelists consider their experience of the selected attributes across all products (each attribute rated independantly from eachother)
