methods to collect gas Flashcards
Method to Collect Gas
Displacement of Water, Displacement of Air, Using a Graduated Gas Syringe
Examples of Gases Collected via Displacement of Water
Oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen
Downward Displacement of Air (Upward Delivery of Gas)
Connect the delivery tube to an inverted test-tube for the gas to be collected.
This method is used to collect gases that are less dense than air (e.g. hydrogen, ammonia).
Upward Displacement of Air (Downward Delivery of Gas)
Connect the delivery tube to a test-tube for the gas to be collected.
This method is used to collect gases that are denser than air (e.g. carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, chlorine, hydrogen chloride).
Using a Graduated Gas Syringe
Gases can be collected in a gas syringe attached to a conical flask. The volume can be measured at r.t.p.
Displacement of Water
This method is suitable for collecting gases which are insoluble or slightly soluble in water.
Displacement of Air
This method is suitable for collecting any gas especially those which are very soluble in water.
