Methods Of Salt Preparation Flashcards

1
Q

Insoluble Carbonate

A
  1. Add to acid in excess
  2. Filter out excess base once reaction is completed (no more bubbles)
  3. Heat indirectly until supersaturation (crystals start to form)
  4. Leave out at room temperature to dry and allow crystals to form
  5. Filter out crystals and dry with filter paper

Solubility Rules

A
  • All nitrates are soluble
  • Na + K + NH4 are soluble
  • Cl + Br + I are soluble unless Ag or Pb
  • Sulphates are soluble unless Ba,Pb + Ca

Q

Titration

A
  1. Measure out alkali using volumetric pipette
  2. Add indicator
  3. Swill burette with acid then fill + record initial value
  4. Add acid drop by drop until colour change is visible
  5. Record values and repeat without indicator for purity
