Historical Reference
Historical facts, dates, locations, etc. are included in one’s writing in order to make it more objective and tbereby more believable.
Illustrations that use contrast
Compare (similarities) and contrast (differences)
Statements of opinion and personal belief
Present their own views on certain facts and pass them as statements that should’ve believed or at least considered by the readers (don’t abuse it)
Literary References
Names of other books, essays, articles written by other people (intertextuality) and by themselves (intratextuality)
Appeal to figures of authority
The opinion, verdicts, points of views of critics, experts and other professional figures
Attempt to draw reader into argument
Hooks the reader and then pulls them into the argument of the essay by posing rhetorical questions eliciting a mental response
Verifiable fact
Facts, figures, dimensions, locations, and formulae are given that can be double-checked by the reader
