Methods Of Production Flashcards
What is job production?
Bespoke and one off production.
(Like painting an art piece,
What is batch production?
Producing sets of things, large volume of production/ sales.
Flow production?
Production line, for standardised products.
Advantages of Job production:
*Handmade and unique products so charge a high price for labour.
*No waste
*Skilled and motivated labour
Disadvantages of Job production:
*Expensive unit costs, high price to make/produce
*Time consuming
*Limited production runs
*Many changeovers
*May not utilise technology
Advantages of Batch production:
*Lower unit costs (than job production)
*Fewer changeovers (than job)
*Produce varieties
*Possible cheaper labour
Disadvantages of Batch production:
*Not continuous
*Lack of flexibility
*Somewhat short production runs
Advantages of flow production:
*low unit costs
*No labour costs
*Fast
*Specialist machinery
*High technology use
*Economies of scale
*Quality
Disadvantages of flow production:
- [ ] High Capital costs
- [ ] Repetitive, de motivating / low morale
- [ ] Breakdown has a huge impact
- [ ] High stock levels (expensive)
- [ ] Needs monitoring ( quality control)
Factors for production/ cell production
(Impacts)
Type of product , is it unique or standardised eg.
Variety, to what extent is variety needed?
Demand for product, one off or mass produced
Size of firm, is it affordable?
Availability orf technology, affordable?
Likelihood of teamwork
What is Cell production?
A system where production is divided into individual production βteamsβ, often on a flow system.
Dividing production up into different βcellsβ.
(Cell A>B>C>D)
Disadvantages of cell production:
Teamwork may not be possible.
Complex layout/ difficult logistics.
More investment for technology.
DEPENDS ON CASE STUDY
Advantages of cell production:
- [ ] High productivity like flow
- [ ] Variety like batch
- [ ] More motivated workforce, part if a team for specialisation
[ ] Higher quality - [ ] Less breakdown and disruption ( unlike flow)
- [ ] Reduce in waste
- [ ] Less stock needed
- [ ] Multi skilled flexibility
