Methods Of Modifying Behaviour (1) - Anger Management Flashcards
Describe anger management - 3 SEE
P1- cognitive behaviour treatment
Anger management = form of cognitive behavioural therapy that develops techniques to reduce aggression
Short term goals = reduce anger/agression in prisons
Long term goals = reduce reoffending rate and promote rehabilitation
P2- three aims for any anger management programme
1- cognitive restructuring = greater self awareness
2- regulation of arousal = control of physiological state
3- behavioural strategies = problem solving skills
P3-Stress inoculation model:
1-conceptualisation = reflect on past/patterns. Offender learns triggers
2-skill acquisition = techniques to prevent anger e.g stop and think or mindful breathing
3-application = offender given the opportunity to role play - successful role play = positive reinforcement from therapist (must see the role play as real life/be committed)
Evaluation of anger management - attrition rates
S-limits effectiveness of AM = attrition rates
E-people may drop out because they don’t like to reflect on their own style of thinking
C-research suggests a ‘readiness to change’ programme using a questionnaire - makes them more prepared
W-only really effective when used along side other therapy styles
Evaluation of anger management - research support
S- strength
E-research shows a 75% improvement rate based on 6 meta analysis
C-however some research only shows a moderate benefit of using anger management as in one study only 1 personal improved
W-does mostly succeed but can’t be used as the only anger preventing scheme - may be better schemes
