methods - meta analysis Flashcards
what is a meta-analysis
involves secondary data gained from a number of studies which have already been conducted on the same topic
When there is conflicting evidence from numerous studies on a particular topic, psychologists may conduct a meta-analysis, or an analysis of exsting analyses
what is an example of a meta analysis in clinical psychology?
stafford
aim of stafford’s meta analysis
Investigate effectiveness of treatments for SZ in children, adolescents and young ppl
procedure of stafford’s meta analysis
Literary search for published articles.
Analysed 27 studies
Study samples = children, adolescents and young people
All used randomised control trials = pps similar characteristics, randomly assigned to either treatment group or control group (waiting list, placebo or no-treatment).
They excluded studies with less than 10 pps and studies which weren’t available in English
strengths of meta analysis
Large data sets due to multiple studies being used meansnthe conclusions should be more generalisable, especially if studies have been conducted in different countries
Less time consuming than conducting research to gather primary data
No ethical concerns associated with research which directly measures pp
