Unstructured interview
Guided conversation, freedom to vary questions, wording, asking follow up questions and probes
Semi structured interviews
Lies in-between the 2 extremes. If necessary further questions can be asked, (always follows up with some sort of questions after the pre planned) - Cicurel and Kitsuse
Structured interviews
Similar to questionnaire, strict instructions, interview conducted in the same way each time in the same order and same tone of voice- close ended and coded questions are used
Group interviews
Number of people interviewed together. Paul Willis used this for his research into lads and schooling, this may include focus groups to discuss certain topics and record their views
Theoretical strengths of unstructured interviews
Interviews views-more opportunity for interview to speak about things they believe are more important, greater freedom to express viewpoints
Checking understanding- allows interviewer to check meanings
Ethical strengths of unstructured interviews
-Build rapport- relationship with participant to gain comfort and allow them to express opinion
