What is a strategy?
A broad, overall aim for a pressure group like getting the public’s support
What is a tactic?
How one intends to execute their strategy. They can broadly be divided into Insider and Outsider.
What is an insider tactic?
An attempt to exert influence on decision making using the institutionalised political system.
Examples of insider tactics
- Petitions
- Lobbying
- Litigation and Judicial Review
- Standing candidates for election
What is an outsider tactic?
A tactic which isn’t an insider tactic - meaning it operates outside the institutionalised system
Examples of outsider tactics
- Climbing buildings
- Demonstrations
- Civil Disobedience
- Boycotts
- Direct Action
What is direct action?
- Political protest that exceeds traditional methods
- May include a degree of violence or illegality
- Aims to catch the attention of the public where traditional methods have failed
Examples of direct action being used
- UK UnCut attacked HSBC in 2011 as they felt that the banks had got away with the recession
- Plane Stupid chained themselves to security at Manchester Airport in 2007 to protest against domestic flights
