Methods and practices Flashcards
GEOMATS
- Both natural and synthetic material
- Along roads, earth dikes and can be used for coastal protection. It is used to strengthen the slopes in the given area.
-
FIBERROLLS
- Natural materials
- Fiber rolls are used for minimizing gully and rill erosion development, it also reduce soil sediments from moving.
- most commonly used in agricultural areas
SLIT FENCES
- Woven synthetic material
- used to prevent sediment contaminated water from the natural draninge ways.
- construction, homebuilding sights
HYDROSEEDING
Natural materials
- construction sites, home building sites, slopes.
traps the sediment, grass roots spread’s deep in a short amount of time, and hold soil well.
TURBIDITY CURTAN
- synthetic materials
- used in construction sites, bridge renovation, marine ports, and road construction
- Protects the environment and important ecosystems from sediment.
CHECK DAMS
-Can be made of many different materials, brush wood, gabions, cement or vegetation.
Slow down water velocity and accumulate sediment during floods.
DESIGN OF TERRACES AND INFILTRATION TRENCHES
Terraces catch water at intervals down the slope and temporarily store it before delivering it through underground tile/pipe or a grass to waterway to the bottom of the slope. Terraces help reducing erosion by reduce the amount and velocity of water moving across the soil surface.
Agricultural
DESINGS OF GABIONS
- made of materials like metal or roughs materials such as rocks, concrete sand or soil.
- The gabion prevent erosion during floods by creating a barrier between the soil and floodwater. They can also dissipate energy from flowing water.
- used for stabilize shorelines, stream banks or slopes against erosion.
GROYNES
The materials: wood, steal, concreate, rocks, rubble or sandbanks.
- Most used on coast
- The waves hit the groynes instead of directly hitting the beach. Groynes trap sediment, it protects the coast because it prevents the sand sediment from longshore drift.
SOIL RIENFORCEMENT
There is both natural and synthetic options, the reinforcement of the soil can be done with geomats, wooden piles, or geogrids.
- Construction sites, but the method is used everywhere where the structure is built on soil with poor mechanical characteristics.
- reinforce the existing soil on the site.
CANAL LINING
- along rivers and canals
- It act like a barrier protecting the sediment and soil from the water. It also prevent waterlogging across the lower areas of the canal.
DIRT ROAD STABILIZATION AND DRAINGE
Natural - u can dig a ditch next to the road from the soil.
- drainage systems can also be placed under the road, and the “drainage pipes” can be made of concrete or hard plastic.
They are used where they are needed, alongside dirt roads. But road drainege are needed in urban areas as well because rain can create erosion thar can break up pavements.
