Method of transmission Flashcards
Serial data transmission
Data is sent one bit at a time over a single wire or channel. Can be synchronous or asynchronous
Why is serial transmission used for long distances?
It is more reliable over long distances. It is cost effective to install as one wire is used. Bits remain synchronised which reduces data errors
Why is serial transmission cheaper than parallel?
Only a single wire is used
What is less likely to happen when serial transmission is used?
Less likely for data to be skewed
Why is there less interferance when serial transmission is used?
Using a single wire reduces costs
Advantage of synchronisation when using serial
Data will be fully synchronised after transmission
How does a USB cable use serial data transmission?
When sending data externally between devices
Parallel data transmission
Several/multiple bits of data are sent down several wires or channels at the same time. It is synchronous
What is an advantage of parallel data transmission in terms of speed?
Provides faster data transfer
Why is there a higher chance of data being skewed when using parallel transmission?
Bits are sent simultaneously
Why is there a higher chance of interferance when parallel transmission is used
It requires more wires
Why is parallel data transmission more expensive?
More wires are used
Other than USB cables, where else is serial trnasmission used?
WIFI
How is parallel transmission used in Integrated Circuits?
For sending data internally
Where else is parallel data transmission used
In RAM and in connections to peripheral devices, such as printers
