Meteorology Vocab Flashcards
air mass
A large body of air with the same air pressure, temperature, and humidity.
air pressure
The weight of air pushing down on an area
anemometer
A tool used to measure wind speed
atmosphere
The gasses that surround and protect earth. There are 4 major layers.
barometer
A tool to measure changes in air pressure
climate
the year after year conditions of earth, due to the position on the globe.
front
A boundary where unlike air masses meet but don’t mix.
high pressure
When COLD air pressure is greater than its surroundings (it sinks); sunny, dry and clear weather
low pressure
When the HOT air pressure is less than its surroundings (it rises); stormy weather.
meteorologist
Scientists who study the causes of weather and try to predict it.
precipitation
Any form of water that falls from clouds.
psychrometer
A tool used to measure humidity.
