Meteorology Flashcards
HIGH LEVEL CLOUDS
Above 20,000 ft, given prefix cirro- means curl, mostly ice crystals
CIRRUS
-Thin feathery wisps (mares tails)
-4,000-20,000 meters
-looks like tufts of hair
-very unique
CIRROSTRATUS
-Thin sheet like
-transparent (sun/moon seen)
-6,000-13,000 meters
-difficult to detect
CIRROCUMULUS
-Light, puffy, short-lived
-5,000-15,000 meters
-less than 200 meters thick
MIDDLE LEVEL CLOUDS
Altitudes 6,500-20,000 ft, made of water droplets and/or ice crystals
ALTOSTRATUS
-Layer clouds
-Thinner than stratus
-Thicker than cirrostratus
-Sun and moon kind of can see
-Light rain, little reaches ground
-Altostratus clouds are formed when large masses of warm, moist air rise, causing water vapor to condense
ALTOCUMULUS
-Globe-shaped clouds in layers/patches
-May signify thunderstorm later in day
-Middle altitude level cloud
2,000-4,000 meters
