Speci Reports (Special Reports)
Speci reports are unscheduled reports that are used to update a METAR report when there are significant changes to the weather in between the hourly reports.
What is METAR
Aviation Routine Weather Report posted every hour to notify you of the current weather conditions observed at the airport.
Station Identifier
A K with a unique 3 letter airport identifier
K= Kilo (A US Airport)
G= Golf
N= November
V= Victor
Airport in Gainesville Florida
If it has numbers like 09G no need for letter K in front
Date and Time
The date and time starts with the the day of the month and is followed by the time in Zulu time.
In the example it’s the 20th day of the month of 1953 hours
Station Modifier
Two types of station modifier that tells you if the report came from an Automated Source (AUTO) or if it is corrected (COR).
Wind
The first three digits will tell you the direction from which the wind is blowing in relation to True North, followed by the type of wind, and the speed in knots.
N= 0 and 360deg
E= 90 deg
S= 180 deg
W= 270 deg
So this is a head wind of 240 Southwest 15 knots. I could have a G so if it’s 24015KTG25 which is Gusts.
Visibility
Visibility is reported in statute miles or SM which can either be shown in the form of a fraction or a whole number.
Weather
First the intensity, followed by the weather phenomenon, and then the descriptor.
+ (plus) = heavy
- (minus) = light
TS = Thunderstorm
RA = Rain
BR = French word (Brume) = mist/ baby rain
FU = Smoke
GR = Hail
