Metaphysics Flashcards
Compatabilism
Determinism is true but we are also responsible for our actions
Determinism
Every event is the necessary consequence of prior causes
Eliminativism
A form of physicalism that denies the existence of a non-physical mind and also jettisons language that refers to the mind
Functionalism
Mental states are constituted by the role they play
Hard determinism
Free will is necessary for people to be held morally responsible for their own actions and that there is no free will (due to determinism)
Idealism
Reality is entirely mental or spiritual
Identity theory / reductionism
Claims about the mind can be reduced to claims about brain states
Incompatabilism
Determinism is not compatible with free will
Interactionism
Mind and body interact with each other even though they are distinct entities
Libertarianism
Human choices are not causally determined by prior events
Materialism
Reality consists only of material entities
Metaphysical dualism
Reality consists of two types of substances
Metaphysical monism
Reality only consists of one type of substance
Mind-body dualism
Mind and body are separate entities
Physicalism
Everything, including the human self, is physical.
All things that exist are entities recognised by physics.
