Non-Foliated – sand sized grains – Main minerals: quartz – Parent Rock: sandstone – Intermediate to High Grade
Gneiss (pink and black)
Foliated – crystalline med. To coarse grain – Main minerals: feldspar, quartz – Parent rock: mudstone, shale, slate, phyllite, schist, granite, diorite – High grade
Marble
Non-foliated – Med. to coarse microcrystalline grains – Main minerals: calcite (or dolomite) – Parent rock: limestone – Med. To high grade
Slate
Foliated – fine to no grain – clay or volcanic ash - parent rock: mudstone or shale – Low grade
Phyllite
Foliated – fine to no grain – main minerals: quartz, mica, chlorite – parent rock: mudstone, shale, slate – low grade
Gneiss (black and white)
Foliated – med. To coarse sized grains – main minerals: amphibole, quartz – parent rock: mudstone, shale, slate, phyllite, schist, granite, diorite - high grade
Garnet schist
Foliated – med. – coarse grain – main minerals: garnet, quartz, mica – parent rocks: mudstone, shale, slate, phyllite - Intermediate grade
Tourmaline schist
Foliated – med to coarse grains – main minerals: Quartz, Mica, Tournaline – Parent rock: mudstone, shale, slate, phyllite – intermediate grade
Mica Schist
Foliated – med. To coarse grain – main minerals: mica, quartz – parent rock: mudstone, shale, slate, phyllite – Intermediate grade
Anthracite Coal
Non-foliated, fine to no grain – Main minerals: carbon – parent rock: peat, lignite, bituminous coal
