Metamorphic Flashcards
3 steps in contact metamorphism
- Deformation of rock as mountains form
- Pressure and heat
- Weight of overlying rock
Parent rock
Where rock comes from, what it is originally
Metamorphism
Process when rocks structure is changed by pressure, heat, and moisture.
Regional metamorphism
Occurs when large areas of rock change change form after exposure to intense heat and pressure
Local metamorphism
When small area of rock change by heat and pressure
Foliation
The tendance of a rock to form bonds of minerals or split along layers
Petrified wood
A fossil in which the organic remains have been replaced bu minerals and become rock.
What happens to shale with metamorphism?
Physical changes occur. It becomes denser and elements combine to form new minerals like mica which can cause foliation causing it to break into thin sheets.
